National Post Review on "Remain Afloat" images by Kristina Bengtsson

Has Pikto discovered some previously unknown pipeline to up-and-coming Scandinavian art? It sure seems that way. July featured whimsical self-portraits from Denmark’s Lotte Floe Christensen, while August puts the spotlight on Swedish photographer Kristina Bengtsson. Her exhibition, titled Remain Afloat, consists of photos themed on — what else? — ups and downs. Pictures of just-launched paper planes, lofty hot-air balloons and astronaut pinups charmingly disperse over Pikto’s display wall. (A video showing an eccentric attempt to use inflated garbage bags as a flight tool is unfortunately projected onto a dark brick wall, making it less successful.) Best is the pinned-to-the-wall letter that ties it all together. In it, Bengtsson asks Virgin’s jet-setting chief Richard Branson whether he’d like to join a hot-air balloon ride over the English Channel, and perhaps share some tips for maintaining that top-of-the-world feeling once back to the grey everyday. Branson doesn’t provide an answer. But viewers can attempt one — even if only for themselves. To Sept. 5.
