ICC Colour Management
Key elements for achieving consistent and accurate colour in a digital workflow:
- Monitor calibration. Hardware calibration using a spectrophotometer or colorimeter is crucial in giving you an accurate representation of colours on your screen. However keep in mind that not all colours in large color spaces such as Adobe 98 or Prophoto RGB will be seen on your monitor, even if properly calibrated. These out-of-gamut colours will be affected by any editing of colour values and may be reflected in printed output.
- Working environment. ISO 3664:2000 recommendations for proper viewing areas include a light level of 32- 64 lux with D50 lighting (5000K) . Walls should be grey with 60% reflectance or less and no reflections should be seen on any monitors. Viewing area should be D50 between 1500-2500lux.
- Output or printer ICC profiles. Printer ICC profiles are lookup tables that represent how colors will be reproduced when printed on a particular device and media combination. The range of colours that any printing process offers can be faithfully represent on-screen using Photoshop and soft-proofing.
